The Durango Declarations Forum

Francis Harvey, Ben Gross, Phil Agre, Ben Shneiderman and others

At the conference on Society and the Future of Computing, held June 11-14, 1995, in Durango, Colorado, Langdon Winner gave a presentation in which he suggested seizing the opportunity the conference presented and jointly writing the Durango Principles. This idea was well received and widely understood as a statement on the relationships between society and computing discussed in presentations, panel discussions, and posters at the conference reflecting the very diversity of society and users of computer technology. Recognizing the opportunity the diversity of the conference participants presented, several inspired documents brought groups together to develop and formulate coherent principles. Durango declarations, imperatives, and commentary are presented.
